Igneous wallpaper
Imitating the crystallization of igneous rocks formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
The process we developed utilises a waste carbon powder from the digital printing industry. Interested in the properties of this material and knowing that landfill is the ultimate alternative, we wanted to explore the possibility of using this powder to form a graphic.
The Igneous wallpaper collection is printed in our studio in Peckham, South East London. Using sustainably sourced FSC certified paper, each roll is hand tinted to achieve a flat ground colour using water based paints.
The metallic pattern in created by hand using a print technique that composes falling carbon powder. The print is heat cured adhering the carbon powder to the paper with a metallic polished finish in a range of hues.
The Igneous wallpaper family was awarded a Design Guild Mark in 2019. Awarded by The Furniture Makers’ Company, a City of London livery company and the furnishing industry’s charity, in order to drive excellence and raise the profile of British design and innovation.
We aim for simple forms explored through scale and colour, finding ways of constructing that quietly elevate the materials each product is made from.
Our aim is to create using the highest quality materials while having the lowest environmental impact. While we are not perfect we continually spend time and energy developing and improving areas of our studio practise, from the smallest details to our largest challenges.
Environment & Provenance
Our products are made locally to us, in small batches so as much as we can, we reduce the movement of our items and the possibility of generating unnecessary energy and material waste.

The studio was established by Nathan Philpott and Jemma Ooi in 2010 and now works with clients on concepts for branding, retail spaces, restaurants and domestic projects, often in collaboration with respected architects and interior designers.
Custhom has a detailed approach to materials and processes. This means that the subtleties of material properties are explored in response to each product or brief.

Oblique
The Oblique collection was developed through the dissection and
reduction of blocks of text. Taking influence from the mail art
movement in Berlin in the early 1970s a web of information has
evolved into the interweaving of lines in irregular blocks which
gently touch and overlap. Explored through print, the oblique
ceramics collection is silk screen printed onto a vitrified porcelain,
this the most durable of dinnerware, fired at a very high
temperature, these plates are elegant and durable and will not
absorb liquids.
